By 911 Pain Management | January 10th, 2022 | Pain Management

Previously, our accident doctors in McAllen went over the benefits of seeking the treatment of a pain specialist if you’ve suffered a whiplash injury as the result of a car accident or some other incident.

In part two of this series, we’ll cover how to determine if you are indeed suffering from whiplash and whether your specific circumstance needs to be treated.

If you have been a victim of a car accident, are experiencing neck pain, and are concerned you may be a victim of whiplash, do not hesitate to contact our accident doctors in McAllen at 911 Pain Management.

How Do I Know if I Have Whiplash?

To start with, let’s describe whiplash.

Whiplash is a type of neck injury caused by the forceful back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. This unexpected and forceful movement can lead to sprains, strains, and fractures in the neck.

One of the challenges of determining a whiplash injury is how quickly it affects an individual. For some, pain and discomfort may be felt immediately, while it may take days (or longer) to develop in others.

To determine if you’re suffering from whiplash, consider the following symptoms:

1. Stiffness in the neck – The muscles in your neck, upper back, and shoulder take the brunt of the injuries. Because of the tension caused by a crash, the muscles tend to stiffen up, making mobility in your neck a difficult task.

If you do not seek a diagnosis from your accident doctor in McAllen, your neck stiffness could develop into a condition known as myofascial pain syndrome. This condition can cause you to have pain and pressure in unrelated body parts, like your limbs or lower parts of your back.

2. Cervicogenic headaches – These are chronic headaches that arise from injuries to the upper cervical joints in your spine due, and are frequent in whiplash accidents.

Once you visit your McAllen personal injury doctor, they can treat your injury, which can lead to improving your headaches.

3. Off-balance and shaky – After experiencing whiplash, it is common to feel dizzy, off-balance, shaky, and have the sensation of vertigo. These symptoms occur mostly in those who also experience cervicogenic headaches and can be relieved by visiting your accident doctor in McAllen.

4. A feeling of burning or numbness in arms – You may be wondering what your arms have to do with a neck injury, but there is indeed a relation. Damaged nerves in your neck can have a profound effect on other parts of your body.

When one of your discs in your upper spine or neck shifts, or herniates, this can cause tremendous pressure on your nerves. This issue can be resolved by resting your body, taking NSAIDs, or in a worst-case scenario, an epidural injection may be administered.

5.Forgetfulness/struggling with focusing/easily angered –  Again, these symptoms seem unlikely for a neck injury, but the stress from an accident, plus the pain from your injury, can have serious consequences on your emotional state.

Feeling depressed and exhausted are repercussions to chronic pain caused by whiplash.

Does Whiplash Need to Be Treated?

There is a high probability that you will need an accident doctor in McAllen to heal from your injuries.

According to a study, almost 20% of victims suffering from a whiplash injury claimed to continue to suffer from pain for 2 years after the accident. The participants of this study were never able to perform their jobs again and were eventually deemed disabled.

This is why it is best to seek out a McAllen personal injury doctor after you’ve suffered a whiplash injury.
