Trigger point injections can be a godsend for those who face constant pain, soreness, and tightness in their muscles. These injections provide relief right on the trigger point.

Like any other medications, trigger point injections have a few side effects patients should know before they make any decisions. Allow your McAllen pain management doctor at 911 Pain Management explain these side effects.

A Little More on Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections (TPIs) are a treatment for muscle spasms and aches. They can assist those who suffer constant headaches along with those who have conditions such as:

  • Chronic pain syndrome
  • Repetitive injury
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia

When life throws you lemons, sometimes you go into stress mode, which can cause muscle tightness and tension. Some individuals may even tense up in their sleep without realizing it.

Trigger point injections may provide pain relief in your tense neck, back, and shoulders.

TPIs can immensely decrease your pain and help to improve your quality of life. TPIs can even increase your energy so you can better enjoy activities in life.

Risks and Side Effects

It is extremely rare to find any medicine that doesn’t have side effects. Trigger point injections are not an exception, but luckily, they can be minimal and rare.

Some side effects associated with TPIs include:

  • Numbness or discomfort around injection sites
  • Indentation of skin at injection sites
  • Lightheadedness after injection
  • Light bleeding

Any pain around the injection sites can be managed with over-the-counter pain medicines, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Most of the side effects should subside within a few days.

Dimpling of the skin and bleeding are less common side effects of TPI. If you are bleeding through bandages or for longer than 30 minutes after the treatment, contact your doctor right away.

Another rare side effect is infections. After an injection, if you develop a fever and/or notice a discharge from the injection site, you should also contact your doctor ASAP.

Some patients that have had a trigger point injection have compared the side effects to the feeling of having your blood drawn. We recommend resting and using an icepack on the injection site to help with the soreness. It is also in your best interest to stretch your muscles after the treatment to prevent stiffness.
